The growing aerospace industry in West Virginia has a pressing need for workers that manufacture and repair airframe components.  In partnership with Lockheed-Martin, Bombardier and HQ Aero, Pierpont has successfully implemented the Aircraft Structures Training Program, resulting in graduates obtaining employment with local aviation and aerospace companies.

ASTP is an 8 week technical training program, totaling 260 instructional hours, introducing aircraft basics and structure technology, along with students achieving safety and quality certifications from the Manufacturing Skills Standard Council (MSSC).  ASTP includes 130+ hours of hands-on exercises and shop skills development in assembly tools, drilling, reaming, countersinking; aircraft assembly; aircraft production fundamentals; shop math and blueprint reading; FOD control; etc.  The ASTP class is held in Hangar B of the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center in Bridgeport, WV.

Admission into the Aircraft Structures Training Program is selective, and upon successful completion, graduates are hired by local aviation companies, therefore individuals must comply with specific Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for employment:
  • 18 or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Pass background check – no felonies
  • Pass drug screen
  • Registered for selective service, if male
  • No aviation experience is required, but preference is given to those with demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
